The Are No Labels When It Comes To Sexual Assault

Some of the most challenging situations I have witnessed during my many years of supporting survivors of sexual assault through their journey of justice and healing are those where the sexual assault survivor was made to believe that their lifestyle choices or sexual identity were factors in causing them to be sexually assaulted.

There is absolutely no justification for sexual assault. No exceptions. Whether you are a sex worker, the wife of a preacher, or somewhere in between – you have done nothing to warrant someone engaging in unwanted sexual contact with you.

Trans People at High Risk of Sexual Assault

However, sadly statistics show that Trans People, for example,  are at a higher risk for sexual assault throughout their lives. [UCLA School of Law Williams Institute. (2021, March 23). Transgender people over four times more likely than cisgender people to be victims of violent crime. https://williamsinstitute.law.ucla.edu/press/ncvs-trans-press-release/]

I want you to know that I am on your side, regardless of any labels, appearance, beliefs or choices. None of those factors are of interest to me. What is my main, and only, interest is that you receive the justice and healing support that you deserve. As a Person.

You may have encountered harassment in the workplace, school or community events; or sexual assault at the hands of a trusted advisor, someone you have known all of your life, or someone that you just met. It is all the same. It is all damaging, life-changing, and ILLEGAL.

If you are a resident of California, are Trans, and have been sexually assaulted, I want you to know that “here” is a safe place to land, and to discuss your situation, trauma and options. If you know of a Trans Person who has been assaulted, I encourage you to reach out, suggest they get in touch with my office by phone, form, or email, and start the healing process under the guidance of someone who truly cares about their long-term well-being.  Our Case Reviews are confidential, and will begin the process of empowerment, as well as ease the distress of trying to deal with an incredibly painful event on your own.

I am on your side.
